High Energy Visible Light (HEV Light) is all around us. It’s part of the light we can see. Most people have heard of Ultra Violet (UV) rays, which can be harmful to our skin, and rightly so, our skin requires protection from them, and this is achieved through SPF sunscreens. Yet, recent findings have also identified HEV, or blue light, as being harmful to our skin and eyes.
HEV light is present in natural daylight, but also many of today’s electronic devices use LED back-light technology to help enhance screen brightness and clarity. These LEDs emit very strong blue light waves. Cell phones, computers, tablets and flat-screen televisions are just among a few of the devices that use this technology. Because of their wide-spread use and increasing popularity, we are gradually being exposed to more and more sources of blue light and for longer periods of time than we would be naturally from sunlight.
According to the latest clinical research, HEV could be among one of the top three skin ageing factors, along with sunlight and pollution. Like UVA rays, HEV Light generates free radicals (also known as ROS – Reactive Oxygen Species). These free radicals cause skin cells to produce enzymes that break down the collagen and elastin that give skin its plump, youthful appearance. This process is known as oxidative stress which is one of the causes of premature photo-aging.
Sixty percent of individuals spend, on average 6 hours a day using tech devices, therefore exposing themselves to high concentrations of blue light emissions. Skin exposed to significant amounts of HEV then goes through premature ageing causing the appearance of wrinkles, as well as dark pigmentation and melasma spots, on the facial skin.
In addition, the monitoring of the detrimental effects of HEV can be tricky, since blue light doesn’t cause sunburn or skin cancer; which makes its impact particularly difficult to observe and measure.
